COST PER CUP (CPC)
While you buy finest & exquisite loose leaf tea, which looks apparently expensive compared to teabags, the Cost Per Cup (CPC) concept becomes one of the most important parameters for a value conscious buyer. This paragraph will help you to understand and compare costing of one cup of tea brewed with teabag and loose leaf tea. Please note, while making this calculations, only the cost of tea is taken into consideration.
For preparing loose leaf tea, expert recommended amount of leaf tea is 2.5g per cup i.e. for 235ml of water. For most people, a heaping teaspoon of loose leaf tea will equal roughly 2.5g. Now say 100g of exquisite tea leaf costs you Rs.500. Considering 2.5g tea leaf per cup, this 100g will brew to 40 cups (i.e. 100/2.5=40) of tea in the first steep. As a thumb rule, exquisite loose leaf teas (white, green, oolong & black) are generally re-steeped for 2-3 times to extract more nutrients out from each leaf. Considering this, 100g of finest loose leaf tea will produce 80-120 cups of tea; considering re-steeping for 2-3 times.
Therefore,
CPC (Loose-Leaf Tea) = 500/120 i.e. Rs 4.17 per Cup; Considering re-stepping for 3 times (40x3=120) &
CPC (Loose Leaf Tea) = 500/80 i.e. Rs 6.25 per Cup; Considering re-stepping for 2 times (40x2=80).
Now, consider CPC for teabags. In the market, Brand A is available at Rs.195=00 (MRP) for 25 teabags & Brand B is available at Rs.75 (MRP) for 10 teabags. Remember, for teabags there is no such opportunity for re-steeping. Hence, one tea bag will brew only one cup of tea.
Therefore,
CPC (Brand A-Teabag) = 195/25 i.e. Rs 7.8 per Cup &
CPC (Brand B-Teabag) = 75/10 i.e. Rs 7.5 per Cup
CPC (HornbillGreen) = 500/120 i.e. Rs 4.17
Verdict: Loose leaf tea is actually more economical than teabags. Loose leaf tea gives you better quality and economy, though apparently, it looks expensive. Remember, loose leaf tea always gives more value for money.
Enjoy ! Cheers !
